Remembering Ahmed Faraz

faraz-saab

Tears were shed in my household and up and down all of Pakistan this time last year upon hearing the death of the one and only Ahmed Faraz.  Upon reflection it is as Nadeem Arif Najmi wrote that ‘Faraz Marte Nahin’,  indeed Ahmed Faraz can and did never die, moreover he defeated death and became immortal.

Today a year later I want to remember Ahmed Faraz for his passion for his country and his struggle for democracy against dictatorship during Zia and Musharraf. Indeed the lawyers movement is synonmous with Ahmed Faraz and it was he who led the intellectuals to come on the streets and add voice to this historic struggle for the rule of law.

I also wish to remember Faraz saab’s humour and towering intellect as a commentator par excellence. But above all I will focus on the poetry of the legend and the man that is called Ahmed Faraz. I finish the post with  one of my favourite poems, it is my tribute to the immortal Ahmed Faraz:

Ahmed Faraz Zindabad
