Smiles in Swat
The brave people of Swat are smiling again after the government negotiated a deal with Sufi Mohammed, the chief of the Tanzim Nifaz Shariat-e-Mohammadi (TNSM) to implement Nizam-e-Adl in Swat and the wider Malakand division.
The TSNM under the leadership of Sufi Mohammed has led a peace rally to Swat and it was a picture worth framing (even though Sufi Mohammed believes them to be unislamic!) when the Swatis so desperate for peace welcomed him with open arms in their thousands. It is hoped that Sufi Mohammed will be able to convince the militants and the maniac Mullah Fazlullah to follow the path of peace.
Personally I view the developments in Swat as positive in the main though I do have some reservations. The first concerns an issue of trust since I have doubts about Fazlullah and his mob on whether they can be trusted to renounce violence or will they play a double game and wait till the opportune time to strike again and install their wicked regime on Swat and beyond.
The pressure from Uncle Sam from change-we-can’t Obama will need to be contained and this brittle government seems incapable of that deed. Remember all it needs is a drone attack with love sent from Pakistan’s Shamsi airbase ordered by Uncle Sam of course and the peace deal will be over and the blame game begins.
That said I must be optimistic and I sincerely hope I am proved wrong on all counts and that peace can be restored in Swat and the wider NWFP province and that Sufi Mohammed can succeed in neutralising Fazlullah.
Let us all hope that the smiles in Swat are permanent, not temporary and not products of a false dawn. Let us also hope that better sense will prevail and the paradise of Pakistan will return in all her glory.
